Show and Tell Friday

Kelli hosts a Show and Tell Friday, as many of you have discovered over the last couple of weeks from my postings. :) Hop on over and participate!

As some of my contacts may remember, my grandmother passed away last October. The second week of July, my mother and aunt came for a visit. They brought with them my grandmother's bedroom suite and her table. The chairs, unfortunately, couldn't fit but we hope to get those later. Anyway, she said that there was a surprise.

This was the surprise. This is a Singer 66 that was built on September 30, 1941, just months before the USA got involved in World War II. I'm ecstatic to get my grandmother's old sewing machine! It doesn't work at the moment, but a gentleman at a sewing machine store told me to try putting machine oil in it before spending money on it. He thought that might just solve the problem.

Whether it works or not, this is a piece of my grandmother. She had this sewing machine since she was 21.

This is the plate on the front of the machine.

Some Singers had pretty fancy decorations. The Redeyes were an example of such. This wouldn't have suited my grandmother, I think. She was too much of a practical person.

This machine, however, does have a pretty etching on the head just above the needle. I'll eventually get around to cleaning it.

I don't remember my grandmother using her sewing machine much past my tenth grade year. However, there was still some blue thread left in the bobbing from the last thing she sewed. I wish I could remember what it was.

Another great thing I got was my great great grandmother's quilt. This quilt is at least a hundred years old. My mother said she remembers my grandmother getting it out and lying it on the floor in the summer where she and my aunt would take naps.

A few of the blocks.

Some more of the blocks.

Unfortunately, the quilt is starting to wear out in spots. Still, I'd say it's in pretty decent condition considering it's age and how it got used fairly regularly for most of its life.

Well, that's my show and tell!
